As the second largest city in Georgia, Columbus is located in Muscogee County in the heart of the Chattahoochee Valley and across the Chattahoochee River from Phenix City, AL. Columbus is the home to the Ft Benning US Army Maneuver Center of Excellence, the National Infantry Museum, Columbus State University, TSYS, Aflac, WC Bradley, Synovus, Realtree, and many other nationally recognized companies making it a thriving metropolis of industry and commerce.
Columbus Uptown (sometimes called downtown) is a rejuvenated center of urban renewal with many fine shops and street vendors, restaurants, and several centers for the arts. On Saturday mornings you can often find street vendors offering a pleasant variety of homemade goods for sale from many local shops. If you’re into running or biking, there are specialty stores dedicated to both, and more, uptown and events regularly put on by the city and the military base to support good causes and promote health are also a common site.
Columbus is home to many great parks, some large some small. A favorite spot for picnicking is Flat Rock Park; their people also enjoy disc golf, mountain biking and cross-country running. Another great option is Standing Boy Creek State Park with 1,579 acres for swimming, boating, hunting, camping, and hiking. If parks are not your thing, then come to Columbus and enjoy the many museums including the Infantry Museum at Fort Benning and the Columbus Museum of Art. If space is more your speed, there is also the Coke-Cola Space Science Center complete with observatory and planetarium.
